about

"Clocking in at just over twenty minutes, 'Lunar Dunes,' the debut release from St. Louis synth and drum duo Moonrace, is a blissed-out voyage, taking the listener to any given extraterrestrial celestial object of their choosing and back again.

The six instrumental pieces often recall drill ‘n’ bass acts from the ‘90s such as Aphex Twin and Squarepusher, the live drums by Joe Hess (also of Already Dead’s Complainer) giving this a more organic slant than those artists, at times veering into mathy Battles territory. The synthesizer work, courtesy of AD designer Curtis Tinsley, falls somewhere between early Krautrock electronic acts (e.g. Tangerine Dream and Kraftwerk) and the more enigmatic scores for late ‘80s/early ‘90s 8- and 16-bit Nintendo games (think MARBLE MADNESS or LEMMINGS).

An auspicious debut, highlights include the scene-setting opener “Night Mission,” the majestic penultimate cut “M-Tentacles,” and the sprawling closer, “Old Magnet Hands.” Best experienced driving at night in a gentle rain."
