about

"During the summer of 2010 a doctor unceremoniously took my beloved wisdom teeth out of my mouth and sent me on my way with some pretty neat pain killers. I spent the next week of recovery recording an album in the wee hours of the morning in an attempt to match the weirdness of the pain killers with music. PaintedFaces's Hermit of Bushwick was what I was going for. What I got was pretty bad.

Hermit of Bushwick is a fever dream (and sometimes nightmare) where you're casually floating through the streets of Brooklyn on a late night only to return home safe and sound in the end. Returning home isn't always a good thing, of course (see Haunted Apartment).

The album is a psychedelic journey around the block when the world quiets down. A casual stroll for reflection. PaintedFaces have presented a story of recollection and peace sparsely tailored to be soft and moving. The record ebbs and flows through ambient keyboards and wailing guitars stumbling together almost seamlessly. Vocals come and go and teeter on the side of ghostly apparitions coming out of the back room. Sounds are presented freely, rarely constricted by tempos and beats.

Tracks like Sea Lamprey evoke a weirdo post-punk that pluck their way into noise. There is a nice folky element at play here as well. Untitled brings out the strum and sing portion of any good psych rock record. The entire record feels as if it is coming from a recluse who appears only at odd times of the day, so the title plays into the vibes quite nicely. Hermit of Bushwick is a perfect summer psychedelic trip. The 17 year old me with icepacks strapped to his face is very jealous."
