about

Artwork by Alex Cunningham

"The one phrase that keeps coming back to me through multiple listens of Dane Rousay’s first solo outing on Already Dead is “controlled chaos.” Then I started thinking about what that means in relation to the title of the album: 'DIVIDE.' There is a division of beauty and dizzying anarchy that makes this album whole. Through every track there are elements of soft, soothing jazz percussion, driving escalating builds, and film-score-worthy climaxes that would fit perfectly inside the mind of a psychotic protagonist losing their sanity in the final moments of a psychological thriller.

As a drummer and percussionist, I can appreciate the precision and skill which Dane displays throughout the six tracks, but the most impressive part is the story they tell. Nothing is on the nose here, though; decide for yourself. That’s the beauty of 'DIVIDE.' Some will find it relaxing and others may be thrust into full-on panic. All of those streets are open for the listener to take."
