about

"I once had a conversation with Mu Vonz about hip-hop and whether or not he considered himself part of the genre. He told me that he didn't really see himself as that. I disagreed though. I told him that I absolutely thought he was hip-hop, but so so so much more than that; and I stand behind that.

Through the years, the nomadic artist has delivered on many levels. His past few releases have strayed more into the realm of straight-up experimental music, but have always been, to my ears, rooted directly in hip-hop. The same direction is taken on his newest self-titled release on Already Dead Tapes. This tape is hip-hop, friend. The feel of the eight tracks move away from the inspiring acid trip downer glow of 'Blasé' and head into a catchier, structured trip-hop vibe that you can nod and sing along to. The pop elements of this album are very refreshing and relatable; sneaking through matters that are as political as they are lighthearted, as tragic as they are humorous. It is hop-hop, but so much more. It's electronica. It's ambient. It's whatever you want it to be.

As one of my favorite artists, and sincerely one of the best people I've ever known, Mu Vonz's self-titled release strikes a heavy tone with me. What he has put into this piece of music is who he is deep down. It's a revealing testimony into what this guy is really like.

Never lacking on grooves, 'Mu Vonz' catches the listener's attention early on and never loosens its grip. Each song is fun in its own right and all eight tracks are consistently solid. There is never a dull moment. Now I understand many may view that statement as pretty cliché, but it's never been more true than on this album. Yeah dude, you're hip-hop. Deal with it.

P.S.
(The conversation with Mu Vonz about him being hip-hop may or may not have happened that way. I may be remembering it wrong due to us both being intoxicated at the time of said discussion. Accurate or not, I stand behind my sentiment.)"
